Telly Savalas classic "The Dirty Dozen" DVD is released in a new special edition format
07/12/06

Warner Bros. 1967 classic action genre gem "The Dirty Dozen" has been re-released in a new special format chock-full of many exclusive features and documentaries.

John Reisman, played by Lee Marvin, is a square-jawed and cynical Army Major who is assigned by General Warden (Ernest Borgnine) to train and command a squad of 12 hardened misfit convicts on a suicide mission against top, on-leave Nazi brass on the eve of D-Day in occupied France. Telly Savalas, Jim Brown, Charles Bronson, Trini Lopez, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker and John Cassavetes, are among the hopeful jailbirds wishing to earn their freedom-if they can manage to survive.

The gritty war film and action-packed drama was written by script geniuses Nunnally Johnson and Lukas Heller and directed by Robert Aldrich of "Flight of the Phoenix" and "The Longest Yard".

The special edition release is spread out over two discs due to the large amount of content. A four-minute introduction by Borgnine kicks off the release before the feature film begins. "Operation: Dirty Dozen" is a fun collection of on-set footage pulled from the filming of the original movie. Three made-for-television sequels to the movie followed two decades after the original release of the film, and the first one from 1985, called "The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission", is also included on the DVD. The two additional sequels are being re-released as a double-feature DVD this month by Sony.

Two additional featurettes are also included in the release. "Armed and Deadly: The Making of The Dirty Dozen" lasts a half hour, while a second 45 minute documentary details the real-life airborne division that inspired author E.M. Nathanson to pen his fictional work upon which the film is based. The DVD concludes with a 30-minute recruitment documentary on Marine Corps combat leadership skills with narration by Marvin.

This dual DVD release is the perfect addition for the collections of both Dirty Dozen and Telly Savalas fans!
