Behind the mic
After he was released from the hospital Telly attended
the Armed Forces Institute. He studied speech, acting,
announcing, directing, and radio and television production.
Telly went on to enroll in Columbia University, where
he continued his studies in psychology, radio and English.
In the mid 1940s, Telly fell in love with his first
wife, Katherine Nicholaidis. They had one child, Christina,
whom Telly named after his beloved mother.
During the early 1950s, Telly worked part-time as a
producer at the U.S. Information Agency's radio station
WABC, the "Voice of America." His job quickly
expanded into announcing, directing and casting for
the station. Eventually he became the executive producer
of three programs, including "Telly's Coffee House."
Coffee House was very popular, and Telly won a Peabody
Award for the show.
